WHAT ARE PFAS?

PFAS are a diverse group of compounds resistant to heat, water, and oil. For decades, they have been used in hundreds of industrial applications and consumer products such as carpeting, apparel, upholstery, certain paper food packaging, firefighting foams, and metal plating.

PFAS are bioaccumulative, meaning they can build up in the bloodstream and human tissue. Since at least the 80s, research has found links between PFOS and PFOA (2 common PFAS chemicals) and a number of health problems such as chronic kidney disease, thyroid issues, certain types of cancers, etc. More recent research is establishing some of the same health issues with many other PFAS compounds, including those intended to replace PFOS and PFOA.

PRIMARY MATRICES

There are several test methods available to detect PFAS. Choosing
the right method requires knowing what you’re testing and why.

PFAS REGULATIONS

Hopefully, your client has shared their regulatory concerns during your discovery sessions. Still, it never hurts to brush up on the myriad of PFAS health advisories, regulations, guidance, and proposals.

Visit our PFAS Regulations page to learn more about the latest actions.

ENVIRONMENTAL SITE ASSESSMENT (ESA) SUPPORT

With the EPA proposing to designate certain PFAS as hazardous substances under CERCLA and RCRA, including PFAS in your site assessments is more important than ever. Pace® partners with environmental consultants to help them develop a comprehensive ESA program that can limit their clients’ liability concerns. We offer testing services across a variety of matrices that may be impacted by industrial activity, including waste materials, industrial and consumer products, AFFF, sludge and biosolids, soil, sediment, ash, groundwater, surface water, wastewater, landfill leachate, and local biota. Refer to our test methods page for more information or request a meeting with one of our PFAS experts for assistance in developing a strategic sampling plan.
